URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT: Self Assessment Deadline Effectively Extended for 2 Days

Due to staff strikes at HMRC, HMRC have indicated that no fines will be charged for returns that are submitted on 1 or 2 February, effectively delaying the deadline until midnight on 2 February.

The reason for this is that HMRC estimate that around 15% of those who submit their tax return on the final deadline day need to speak to an HMRC employee.

What if I still get fined?

It is not yet clear how this will work; it is still possible that you will receive a fine, but you will then need to appeal it.

If you do receive a fine, you need to appeal in writing within 30 days of the date on which HMRC advises you of their decision, or sends you a penalty notice.

Should you get a penalty notice you should use the form attached, and explain the situation, ensuring that you point out that you believe being unable to contact an advisor falls within HMRC's definition of a 'reasonable excuse'.

If you are in any doubt regarding this, please do contact us immediately.

Note: Obviously, we would still recommend that you do try to get your Self Assessment Tax Return filed and paid by the 31st January!
