How Keepers Help Individuals In Sussex with their Self Assessments

‘Individual’ is a very broad term in accountancy. Usually by ‘individual’, an accountant means someone who isn’t a business owner, but has ‘other income’ that needs to be declared to HMRC.
‘Other income’ could be anything; it could be a property they are renting out, it could be investments they have; it really can be pretty much anything.
With the tax regime becoming more complex, and the spotlight shining on taxpayers’ individual responsibilities, everyone who has to pay tax needs professional advice and support if they are going to optimise their tax position, save money, and ensure that they meet all the compliance requirements.
Now, most Individuals simply require a Self Assessment Tax Return. All they expect their accountant to do is use the figures they have provided, fill in the boxes, and hey presto; all done.
Which is where we differ; for no extra cost on top of the initial fee for a Self Assessment, we actively look through ‘the books’ before we complete the Self Assessment, and query the client on if they have claimed for this, or if they have claimed for that.
This obviously keeps our clients happy, as they have more money than they thought they had, and keeps up happy as well; knowing that we can call ourselves proactive!
We offer a free download, called the Individual’s Self Assessment Tax Kit, which we encourage our clients to download before handing over their books to us.
This helps them to identify (less complex) areas where they could reduce the amount of tax they pay. They then hand over the books to us, which is where we have a look at some of the more complicated areas of tax with the aim of reducing their tax bill that little bit more, and then of course complete and submit their Self Assessment.
