While, depending on your circumstances, there may be a lot more than 1 thing standing in your way, there is one common mistake many people are making.
People make this mistake, and then wonder why their business is not growing at the rate that they want.
The one thing standing in your way on the route to success is… You.
Well, the mistake is you working in your business, and not on it.
You may have heard of this saying before.
What it means is that rather than working on developing the business, bringing in new customers, and finding new opportunities, you are doing the ‘client work’ – ie. The work you have won so far.
There are so many dangers to this strategy.
For example, what happens if you have, say, 5 clients, each earning you £1k a month, and you are not actively seeking new business because you are too busy doing the actual work.
One of your clients then leave; for no particular reason, they just leave. You’ve then lost 20% of your business. What’s more, you can’t just shrug it off and say “I’ll get a new client”. How do you know how long that will take? Can you afford to lose 20% of your business whilst you are looking for a new client?
Chances are, the answer to that question is no!
Which is why it is so important to be working on the business, and not in it. If your business can run without you, then these are great foundations for building a successful business.
This is because while your staff can do the client work, you can focus on winning new customers, getting more out of your current customers, and much more. This can, of course, also be the other way around, with you completing client work, and staff focusing on business development.
What are your thoughts? Do you work on your business, or in it?
